We learn about it in history. We cringe when we hear it. We all state we're opposed to it. However we continue to support it. Slavery, first introduced to America when Columbus started taking advantage of native Americans. The colonists soon realize slaves imported from Africa was cheap and easy due to technological advances, and like wildfire, slavery swept through every plantation in America. Although outlawed in 1865, many big named companies still use manuel labor from children, under conditions similar to slavery. However, most Americans continue to buy clothes, toys, food etc. from these companies. Nike continues to be one of the leading brands of clothes but little do Americans know children slaved over most of the clothes they wear. Nike denies these accusations claiming they have little control over subcontracted factories. Americans need to pay more attention about where they are buying their clothes from. Even checking a tag could tell someone where the piece of clothing was made which may help avoid places known for sweatshops. Will you continue to buy clothes due to their cheap price tag?

  1. Hello, Michael! My name is Ms. Blair and i have been observing your classroom for the past few weeks. I will also be student teaching in your class this winter. I am looking forward to getting to know your and your classmates throughout this school year!

Unfortunately, the type of modern slavery you describe in your post often gets swept under the rug in the name of cheap goods. How might the fight against this type of slavery differ from the fight against slavery in the 1800's? What values are at play here?
